We have all laughed at the guy who orders a cheeseburger, fries and a Diet Coke, right? Well, Agricultural University of Copenhagen did a new research on 41, old, overweight participants. Over a 10-week period, they added 1 litre of soda water everyday to the subjects regular diets, giving half the group drinks sweetened with high-calorie sucrose while the other half got non-caloric artificially sweetened sodas. The participants had not been told who got what.
Believe it or not, at the end of the study, those who drank in sugary sodas gained an average of 3 pounds, but those who drank the diet drinks actually lost just over 2 pounds. The researchers attempted to explain this phenomenon by suggesting that when we consume more calories from one food source we instinctively cut back on another-except when we drink soda. Could this also apply to all those over-priced caramel mocha caffè latte drinks to which America looks to be so addicted? Maybe we need diet coffee as well!
